From an Idea to a Streetcar

Starting point for the reconstruction of car 137 are two existing “Maximum” type powered trucks (Patent BSI (Bergische Stahlindustrie)) and countless historic parts, aided by historic documentation and drawings.

The car’s body is completely built from oak wood without a supporting steel frame, which only became a standard construction practice at a later date. Loads are carried solely by massive wooden beams with a steel lattice-work used for stiffening purposes. The end platforms are built on steel supports.

Just delivered from the factory, car 137 is seen on the transfer table at the main depot Fürther Straße. This as-delivered state of the car is how the reconstructed car will appear once finished.

All planning work will be done by our own qualified volunteers. Based on the original documents a new set of plans, documentation and wirings plans will be created for reconstruction and certification processes.

Frame and wooden body will be built by carpenters of MPK Kraków (www.mpk.krakow.pl). The interior design and woodwork will be based on historic photographs, as these cars were unique with no other similar cars being available as reference. All assembly work, component overhauls, wiring and painting will be done in proven manner by MPK Kraków.

Reconstruction of the car will take place in five phases, based on progress and availability of funding. This tiered approach enables us to go ahead with the project even without yet having secured the full funds of about 590,000 Euro.

1. Phase: Reconstruction of the lower car body and framing
2. Phase: Completion of the car body with platforms and hand brake
3. Phase: Interior work including glazing and painting
4. Phase: Wiring and electric installations, reworking of electric components
5. Phase: Restoration of the historic powered trucks
